NHL Pre-Season Review
The countdown has begun. The puck is set to drop on the first game of the 2011-2012 hockey season in less than a month's time. With unexpected injuries, salary cap constraints, and free agency gone wild, most of the current team line-ups are likely to look quite different on opening night. For this reason, making educated guesses about which team will take home the silverware is quite the challenge at this point, but here are some thoughts on some of the team dynamics taking place right now to put you in the mood for the upcoming
NHL
betting action.
Current Champs
It's not just that Boston went all the way to become defending champions, it's that they did it so convincingly. That being said, in the race for the Stanley Cup, bets based upon a previous title win are about as safe and secure as the teeth of a goalie. Some analysts are predicting a “hangover” that will prevent the Bruins from a repeat performance. Others are describing the team as being as strong as ever. After all, they still have Lucic, Chara, and two superb goalies.
Washington
The Capitals are without doubt in smoking form and a very likely contender for the cup. Ovechkin has nothing to prove except that he still has nothing to prove. Combined with rock-solid defense in the form of Roman Hamrlik, the Caps will do some serious damage.
Vancouver
Experts are predicting a slow start for the Cannucks this year after a disappointing off-season. Add to that the absence of Ryan Kesler and Mason Raymond, and you've got a pretty shaky foundation for a championship campaign. Still, a team of this caliber can pull themselves through, especially since Kesler should be back on the ice in time for the playoffs.
Toronto
The leafs are poised to make a comeback with 2 outstanding acquisitions in the form of Cody Franson and Matthew Lombardi. After a drought that never seemed to end it looks like the Maple Leaf fans will finally see their team back in the playoffs.
Pittsburgh
Everyone seems to be very optimistic about the Penguins. Last year they chalked up 49 wins, putting them in second place for the most games won by any franchise. Since then the team has souped things up even further with quality signing in James Neal and Steve Sullivan. Overall we're looking at a solid team that's talented, balanced and thirsty to drink again from the cup.
Detroit
As always, the Red Wings are pretty popular favorites for taking the cup. Fans feared that Rafalski's retirement would leave a vacuum in the team, but the Red Wings are still the franchise to fear in the Western Conference, and with some strong new players along with dependable talent like Datsyuk they definitely have what it takes to go all the way.
