Vancouver
Matt Cooke, the notorious ex-Vancouver player, stole the spotlight by scoring goals instead of dealing out cheap shots, helping the Penguins dominate the Canucks’ in their last game. Vancouver’s goalie Roberto Luongo left the game with some thinking to do after letting through what he considered to be some easy saves. The Canucks will play the Flyers on Wednesday, 12th October.
Toronto
Hardly a convincing victory, the Leafs won their last game 6-5 against the Senators, picking up another 2 points. From being 5-1 down, Ottawa finally decided to get stuck in about halfway through the 3rd and went on to score another 4 goals, but it wasn’t enough to topple the Leafs who held on despite their flimsy defense. For their next game, Toronto will be meeting the Calgary Flames on Saturday, October 15th.
Calgary
The Pittsburgh Penguins have definitely started the season off on their right skate. They took advantage of the Flames’ penetrable defense line as they built up a 5-3 victory on Saturday night. Calgary face Montreal for their next game on Thursday, 13th October.
Edmonton
The Oilers last game against Pittsburgh ended up being a tight battle for domination. Letang put the Penguins in the lead pretty early on, but after more than 55 minutes Edmonton finally equalized. In the shootout the Oilers prevailed ending the game 2-1. Edmonton faces Minnesota on Thursday, 13th October.
Winnipeg
Spectators at the Jets’ last game left their team with the knowledge that they definitely have the full support of their fans. Unfortunately, an arena bursting with good vibes wasn’t enough to beat Montreal who took advantage of their youthful opponents, overpowering them with a 5-1 result. The Jets face the Blackhawks on the 13th of October.
Ottawa
The Senators’ fierce comeback in their last game against the Maple Leafs provided a good display of heart despite their loss. They’ll be hoping to turn that spirit into some tangible points this Tuesday night at their opening home game against Minnesota.
Montreal
Despite being an away game played in front of a very pumped up opposing crowd, Montreal’s match-up against Winnipeg was a display of the team’s ability to provide solid performances. Goals were scored by Tomas Plekanec, Mike Cammalleri, Yannick Weber, Travis Moen, and Max Pacioretty while goalie Carey Price racked up 30 saves. The game ended 5-1. Montreal will face Calgary for their next game on Thursday, 13th October.
